jewellery care

Every piece of Bibi van der Velden’s jewellery is unique and made with care.

They are made of gold, sterling silver, pearls, precious gemstones and exclusive materials. We advise cleaning your jewellery with a soft toothbrush and mild soapy water and lightly brush to remove impurity and store them in a soft box or pouch. It’s important to remind not to brush hard on pieces with blackened silver as this will remove the blackening. Ultrasonic cleaning is not recommended, and should only be carried out at a professional jeweller or jewellery store.

Special care must be taken for pieces that include Pearls, Emeralds, Mammoth Tusk, Scarab Wings and any other organic gemstones. Please do note that Mammoth Tusk may develop tiny hairline fractures or yellow with time as this material is organic and it is part of the ageing process. Also, Scarab Wings can discolor under high heat such as hot water or hair-dryers.

We recommend you avoid creams and lotions, soap, chemicals, such as perfumes, cleaning products
and chlorine, extreme heat and any other abusive materials or activities as gardening.

Mammoth Care Guide

Mammoth is a material that is over 60,000 years old, therefore you should treat it with the utmost care. Avoid contact with detergents, body lotions, soap, or extreme heat when wearing, along with vigorous activities such as gardening. To care for your mammoth tusk jewellery, apply the accompanying Renaissance Wax to the piece from time to time. Hairline fractures can naturally appear in the mammoth tusk, as it is an organic material. If well cared for, this design will become a treasured heirloom to be passed on to future generations for years to come.

Scarab Care Guide

The Scarab wings used in Bibi's designs are entirely natural, and are not dyed, polished, or treated in any way. To create a stable base, the wings are backed in 18k gold or silver.

The wings are naturally weather-resistant and durable, but they should be kept away from any sources of direct heat. Remove your jewellery when washing hands with warm water or using hair dryers.

The wings can also be damaged by chemicals, so you should remove your Scarab Collection jewellery if applying perfumes, soap, or cleaning agents. The jewellery should be stored in a cool, dry place, as prolonged exposure to humidity could damage the wings' appearance.

With proper care, your Scarab Collection jewellery will retain its beauty for decades - or even centuries - to come.
